Activities During Boarding School
Photography was my main love at Williston. Mr. Hing was a wonderful teacher as well as my dorm parent my senior year. Mostly I stuck with photo, but I dabbled in amnesty international, and the spanish club. I also practiced dj'ing on my free time in my room.
1.) What do you think makes your school unique relative to other boarding schools?
After visiting several boarding schools, I made my decision on Williston because it's not as rural. The surrounding area is known as the five college area, which makes this school unique because it creates an intellectual and nurturing atmosphere for those who reach off campus for learning oppurtunities. So every weekend although it's not city life- you aren't stuck on campus. But if you choose to stay there are plenty of activities. Classes are small, but this is the norm for boarding schools. Work jobs are mandatory, as well a athletics but one season a year you can choose an art alternative.
2.) What was the best thing that happened to you in boarding school?
I really grew as a person and i was so prepared for college. I found out that teachers are not always "awful" or whatnot, but I found that i could look up to some. Namely, Mr. Kinsler and Mr Hing were my favorites and were very supportive of me academically and socially.
3.) What might you have done differently during your boarding school experience?
I could say I would have conformed more, but that's just not me. It's more mature than your average old public high school- but teenagers still judge on factors that are superficial- like how someone looks, et cetera.
Application process? no, i don't think theres anything i would change.
4.) What would you never want to change about your school?
no dress code?
the campus itself?
5.) What things could be improved about your school?
less of a negative view on the surrounding town.
more of a push to have students interact with each other, positively.
6.) Do you have any final words of wisdom for visiting or incoming students to your school?
The ladies at the stu bop called me princess and made me a chocolate milkshake with reeces peanut butter cups.
You may not be in college yet, but being there you can gain the "freshman 15" or more by dining too much at the stu bop.
i loved memorial hall the best, the other two years i was in john wright.
if you're a guy- i'd avoid wherever ms. wockley is dorm parenting at [which was Ford when i left]
1.) What did you like best about your schools academics?
Proper college preparation. Many of the teachers do live on campus so they are easily contacted after school. If they're not on campus they most likely live very close by and they do make an effort to help you do your best. Teachers are aware that students learn in their own different, special ways. Or at least the teachers i had did. They tried their best to teach different concepts in a way that was understandable to me.
Lots of classes are available as well.
2.) What did you like least about the academics in your school?
I wasn't a big fan of most of my teachers grading policies, but most of my poor grades could be attributed to my own mistakes and procrastination.
1.) What did you like best about your schools athletics?
Lots of choices. Facilities were good, as far as I can see.
2.) What did you like least about the athletics in your school?
Even if you're not an athlete, sports take a lot of your time. It's always good to exercise, but sometimes people don't like competitive sports.
1.) What did you like best about your schools art program?
Like i mentioned above, photography took up most of my time here. The photo labs were pretty good for not being a college arts school. Wonderful theater productions. The teachers from this department were always a wonderful asset to the school.
There are lots of options as well.
2.) What did you like least about your schools art program?
Can't say I disliked much- maybe no pottery? Although I know they have a kiln, but never saw a pottery class offered.
1.) What did you like most about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?
Lots of activities to choose from. Ranging from clubs/groups to weekend activities. Many students participate, and the quality is also excellent. The school itself is very supportive of different activities that clubs prepare or plan.
2.) What did you like least about the extracurricular activities offered at your school?
Unless you're a leader, there's little communication between club members outside of meetings- as in organizing, et cetera.
1.) What was the best thing about dorm life in your school?
Most proctors were nice, most dorm parents as well. Rules aren't that bad.decent sized rooms, i got lucky my senior year with a single.
2.) What did you like least about dorm life?
The interaction between day and boarding students is... weak. I understand there are rules, but when it's not your fault that your cab got you home late because of whatever reason [cab was late picking you up in noho, got lost, traffic]- it's too bad. You will be held responsible. Sometimes you get stuck with mean dorm parents.
1.) What was the best thing about your dining arrangements?
Dining hall had lots of choices, and plus there is the "Stu Bop" which i'd reccomend you stay away from if you care about your caloric intake.
2.) What did you like least about your dining arrangements?
Protein wise, maybe i'm just picky, but meat and fish were never good options at dinner.
1.) How welcome did you feel by the other students when you first arrived at the school
I felt fairly welcome when i first arrived, considering I didn't know a soul. Unfourtunately my friends either got kicked out, or were homesick all year. So my second and third year, I was sort of stuck without a stable, strong group of friends but still had people to talk to and hang out with.
2.) Describe the level of diversity and integration of students in your school:
I think, comparatively, the school is pretty diverse. The school seems to be straying away from students being individuals themselves. My first year had people with manic panic dyed hair and piercings, and by the time i left everyone seemed to be dressed in abercrombie and fitch.
3.) Describe typical fun activities you did on a weekend:
Went to noho to see movies, shop, eat good food, just people watch or whatnot. College parties at surrounding colleges... renting movies
4.) What was the town like?
I ventured in to town, and made friends with "townies". The school does not support that though, and dislike when students interact too much with townies. The town has a video store, a seven eleven, a couple pizza places, a chinese restaurant, etc. Northampton and Amherst are close by though and have tons of options- noho is only 5-8 minutes away by cab [$7]
