- Described in the National Arts Centre newsletter as “Two young Ottawa string virtuosos”, cellist Stanley Leong and his violinist brother Kerson Leong joined Maestro Zukerman and the NAC Orchestra at their sold-out gala on October 4th. This gala, benefitting arts education programs for young people, began with a classical programme led by Maestro Zukerman and ended with a performance by Tony Bennett and his quartet. Stanley, 13, and Kerson, 11, performed Allegro from Vivaldi’s Concerto in B-flat major for Violin and Cello, filled with “acrobatic highjinks requiring nimble fingers!”
Stanley Leong studied cello with Anne Contant for eight years and is currently studying with Paul Marleyn, cello professor at the University of Ottawa. At the recent 2008 competition in Quebec City, he won First Prize and made his solo debut at the CMC Gala with the Quebec Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Yoav Talmi.
Kerson Leong currently studies violin with Serhii Vyhovsky at Tutti Muzik. In the recent 2008 competition in Quebec City, the judges commended him for his stunning performance. He was also recognized in the Galaxie Rising Star Program of the CBC and was also the youngest finalist in the 2006 nationwide CBC Mozart Variation Contest held to celebrate Mozart’s 250th birthday.
Both students have been multiple top prize winners in the Canadian Music Competition, and both participated in last summer’s Tenth Anniversary NAC Summer Music Institute in the Junior Strings Programme. However, this gala marked the first time that either musician has played with a full orchestra.
Stanley and Kerson will be headed to Montreal in mid-November as they have been invited back to perform with I Musici de Montreal in their Ogilvy (Stars of the Future) Series.
