The Development office continues to make sensational progress in the Center for the Arts campaign. Currently at the half-way point of their $3 million objective for the building construction, the project’s plans are nearing completion and the goal for ground-breaking rapidly approaches. The Center for the Arts is an essential element in reaching the Glenholme Arts Program mission, which is to make the arts a vital, effective and ongoing part of every student’s life. Directly linked to the Motivational Management System, the Arts Program is designed to positively impact each student; in their artistic skills and social competencies, which will assist them in mastering their treatment plan goals. The Center for the Arts will enrich the existing music, dance and visual arts programs. Once completed, it will be the largest venue on campus, as building plans consist of a full theater including backstage, a balcony area, and seating for 300; providing adequate space for students, families, faculty and staff to convene for performances and assemblies. In addition to the theater, classrooms, music practice rooms, costume workshops and faculty offices are also planned. A participation of 100% of the Glenholme community will ultimately accelerate this project to its completion. Please contact Bart Geissinger at bgeissin@devereux.org or the Development office for ways to contribute to the making the Glenholme Center for the Arts a reality.

- "We're Going to Disney World"
In the Inaugural Senior Class Trip, twenty-four Glenholme senior class and staff members traveled to Walt Disney World in Orlando, FL of fun, excitement, and education. The group of nineteen students and five staff stayed in Disney’s All-Star Sports Hotel and visited seven theme parks and attractions during their five day excursion.
The parks and attractions included Blizzard Beach Water Park, Downtown Disney, Epcot Center, Disney’s Boardwalk, Magic Kingdom, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Park, where the group participated in the Y.E.S., Youth Education Series.
Y.E.S. provided the opportunity for a learning experience. This program transported group behind the scenes of Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Magic Kingdom and demonstrated how classroom learning can make exciting things happen every day at the park.
The Inaugural Senior Class Trip fulfilled everyone’s expectations and more. The students were exemplary role-models which made the trip an enormous success and set the stage for future trips.
This year’s 2009 Senior Class Trip will be incorporated into May’s vacation week, which is Saturday May 23 through Sunday May 31. We look forward to our next Senior Class adventure.

The Devereux Glenholme School of Washington, Connecticut is a Silver Sponsor of the Autism Speaks’ Walk Now for Autism New York City 2008 5K Walk on June 22, 2008. The New York walk, the nation’s largest autism-awareness event with over 11,000 participants, has raised over $860,000 toward their goal of $1.2 million. Glenholme’s sponsorship and participation helped underwrite the event including t-shirts for participants, refreshments and entertainment.
Twenty-one students, accompanied by several staff members, actively contributed to the day’s events. The Glenholme Ensemble performed at the South Street Seaport “Pier 17” Stage as part of the entertainment. Directed by William Toy, the chorus sang three medleys, a pianist played two pieces on the keyboard, and three students performed a hip-hop dance. The students of The Glenholme School are exceptional role models, participants and advocates of Autism Speaks and their mission.
Autism Speaks is dedicated to increasing awareness of autism spectrum disorders, to funding research into the causes, prevention and treatments for autism, and to advocating for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. Walk Now for Autism, the nation's largest grassroots autism walk program, is Autism Speaks' signature fundraising and awareness event, taking place in communities across the United States, as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom. Powered by volunteers and families with loved ones on the autism spectrum, this successful fundraising effort not only generates vital funds for autism research but also raises awareness about the increasing prevalence of autism and the need for increased research funding to combat this complex disorder. - Glenholme Celebrated the Importance of Grandparents
The Glenholme School celebrated the value of grandparents and the amazing affect they have in the lives of their grandchildren with their First Annual Grandparent’s Day on September 19, 2008. Thirty family members journeyed to Glenholme from all over the country to enjoy the campus and the events of the day including student-led tours of the campus, to see classrooms, activity offerings such as the equestrian program, fitness room, go-kart track, movie theatre, drama and music, faculty presented several specifically successful programs they have instituted, Health Living and Community Service, along with a delightful buffet catered by the Pantry here in Washington.
These special individuals, grandparents and surrogate-grandparents alike, play a significant part in their devotion and support to the lives of these young students. They set an example for all to aspire to, as they teach, share, mentor and guide. We look forward to our Annual Grandparent’s Day at Glenholme becoming a new school tradition for our families.

- Curtains Up: Glenholme Students Perform “Grease”
The Glenholme School’s students of Arts and Drama Department performed the high school version of “Grease, A New 50’s Rock ‘n Roll Musical” by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey on August 21, 2008. An audience of over 150 family, friends, staff and students watched from their hillside position as the cast and crew worked their theatrical magic.
Glenholme’s population is moderate compared to the scope of the performance. Of the eighty-five summer students, fifty-one students performed and participated in the production.
It was an extraordinary performance by cast and crew alike. The result of every one’s efforts was smiles, laughs, joy and pride. We look forward to the excitement next year’s production will bring.

The Glenholme School gears up for a new robotics program with FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. The Glenholme Robotics Team kicked off their FIRST Technical Challenge, FTC, with a crew of 10 high school age students on Saturday, September 13. This “sport for the mind” combines the excitement of sports with the intellectual challenge of science and technology.
The FTC competition level requires the Glenholme Robotics Team to utilize a variety of academic and social skills. The fabrication of the robot encompasses engineering, animation, and design. The creation of a team logo, costumes and trading buttons will challenge their art and design capabilities. While the presentation and public speaking portion will test their language arts abilities. The FTC is also set on a tight timeline, requiring the team to develop efficiency and effectiveness. Lastly, the competition exposure will instill graciousness, professionalism, and teamwork.
Competition begins in January 2009 and culminates in June 2009 under the Georgia Dome. The Glenholme School’s community of faculty, staff, students, parents and contributors gear up for the excitement of robotics and the new possibilities this program opens for the school.
