Lawrence Academy was founded in 1793 as Groton Academy. The school changed its name in 1845 in honor of Amos and William Lawrence, the school's major benefactors during that era. Lawrence has earned a reputation for excellent college preparation through curriculum designed to stimulate creative thinking and active participation and to motivate students to take responsiblity for their education. Academics include a brand new, state-of-the-art, academic building; expanded arts program housed in the Williams Art Center; an athletics program, based in the Stone Athletic Center; and a variety of on- and off-campus programs to allow for personal commitment to social and cultural activities.
