The Oliverian School is committed to the following goals:

• To provide an engaging and challenging academic curriculum that prepares students for college while remaining responsive to the strengths, special needs, and diverse learning styles of our students.
• To provide a wide range of learning opportunities that involve students in the operation and management of our working farm, our maple sugarhouse, and our award winning wildlife preserve.
• To provide innovative and exceptional instruction by attracting knowledgeable and dynamic faculty who are committed to our community as teachers and role models.
• To use an adventure based approach to teaching by engaging students in vigorous and rewarding learning experiences. Students will meet academic objectives while enhancing physical wellness and self-confidence, practicing leadership, and building interpersonal relationships.
• To encourage a family commitment to the "life of the school" through a program that is designed to establish more meaningful and supportive connections for our students.
• To help students acknowledge and resolve difficulties through an active and ongoing individual and group counseling program under the supervision of licensed clinical faculty.
• To instruct students in a variety of competitive intramural and non-competitive individual athletic endeavors that promote a lifelong commitment to fitness and a responsible use of leisure time.

The Oliverian School adheres to a "three prong" approach that emphasizes Strength in Academics, Growth through Adventure, and Success in Service. We are intentionally small to ensure our students benefit from structure, personal attention, and a sense of belonging.

Academically, The Oliverian School offers a carefully constructed college preparatory program for non-traditional learners, based on the intellectual principles of Inquiry and Empirical Analysis, Social and Ethical Reasoning, Systemic/Ecological Thinking and Communication and Expression. Students not only participate in traditional core subject area coursework, but also project learning that encompasses real world needs and applications. Core offerings include math, science, language arts, social studies and spanish.

The Oliverian School's Adventure Program encompasses canoeing, rock climbing, sailing, hiking, urban adventure and ski activities. By way of example, in the fall of 2004, students have sailed in Boston Harbor, climbed several White Mountains, canoed the Connecticut River, explored Boston, and climbed at the world famous Rumney Cliffs. The Oliverian School has partnered with Loon Mountain to offer an exciting ski and other winter activities program.

The Oliverian School's Stewardship Program fosters a commitment to community service and learning outside the classroom, through hands-on experiences on our working farm and wildlife preserve. In addition to maintaining their own personal space and home, students are challenged to care for our herd of cattle and maintain our 1,800 campus. As students progress, they are expected to reach out into the community and world at large to provide further service.

SUMMER SCHOOL 2008
From June to August, summer comes full bloom to the Oliverian campus through its Summer Session. With experienced and dedicated staff, Oliverian Summer Session offers individual choice, a variety of programs, and a platform to strengthen academics.

Presented in two contiguous sessions, our summer session offers students in grades 7-12 an educational experience which inspires a passion for new knowledge and an understanding of the relevance of education in daily life. With an emphasis on experiential learning, our program allows students to pursue traditional subjects in non-traditional ways, allowing them to engage more fully and apply the subject matter to real-life circumstances. Students with different learning styles will find support, encouragement, and success.

Academic Courses: Our program emphasizes choice. The Oliverian School believes every student is unique and approaches a summer program with different needs. Therefore, the Oliverian Summer Session emphasizes choice, allowing students to sign-up for the core courses they need while allowing plenty of opportunity to try new activities to round out their schedule.

Summer Session offers academic credit in English, Mathematics, and Art. English coursework concentrates on Literature and Writing. Mathematics offerings include Algebra I, Algebra II with Trigonometry, and Geometry. Our Art program focuses on Studio Art and Pottery-Making, with integrated opportunities available in Dance and Theatrical Arts.

Academic courses run Monday through Thursday. Mornings are dedicated to classroom study, while afternoons allow time for integrated learning and activities. Friday is reserved for trips and off-campus learning. Weekends and evenings provide additional opportunities for fun and supportive programming.

Gain Knowledge Outside the Classroom: Summer Session places emphasis on experiential and integrated learning, so students will pursue their studies both within and outside the traditional classroom setting. On campus, this could mean exploring the connection between Dance, Poetry and Art in our “Voices” workshops, or a collaboration between Art and Math classes to create artwork inspired by 3-D design.

Off-campus adventures also play an important role in the Summer Session. Current field trips include: The Sterling Renaissance Festival, VINS Nature Center - New England’s leading raptor care facility, Conway Scenic Railroad, Fourth of July Fireworks at the Mt. Washington Hotel, and Six Flags New England.

Pursue Your Interests: Once students are enrolled in their core courses, they choose additional activities to complete their schedule. Choices may include:

• Outdoor Adventure, including Hiking and Kayaking
• Martial Arts
• Horseback Riding at the Dartmouth Riding Center
• CPR and First Aid Certification
• Team-Building and Leadership
• Pottery-Making
• Organic Gardening and Stewardship
• Dance, including Modern, Jazz, and Belly Dancing
• Studio Arts
• Theatrical Arts

Program Dates: The Oliverian School Summer Session is made up of two 4-week sessions which can be combined into an 8-week program or taken separately. Session 1 begins on Sunday, June 22, 2008 and ends on Saturday, July 19, 2008. Session 2 begins on Sunday, July 20, 2008 and ends on Saturday, August 16, 2008. The combined program runs from June 22 – August 16, 2008.

Tuition includes academics, room, board, on-site counseling support, and activities. Financial aid packages are available.
