School Notes:
  • The Gow School, in its 80th year, admits young men, grades 7-12, of average to above cognitive ability in addition to a diagnosis of dyslexia or similar language based learning disabilities.
  • The School provides a daily Reconstructive Language Program (an original Orton based phonetic language program that focuses on oral reading, reading comprehension, spelling, vocabulary and written expression) and a multi-sensory classroom presentation balanced with solid college preparatory content courses.
  • Our boys have a deficit in one or more of the following; reading decoding, reading comprehension, spelling, written expression, or mathematics and approximately 28% have an additional attention deficit disorder or auditory processing issues. We are unable to provide for boys with documented non-verbal learning disabilities or those with historical emotional or behavioral problems beyond those of educational frustration.
  • We are markedly selective in choosing our student body and therefore quite successful in offering accommodations and remediation. The Gow School has helped thousands of young men achieve their goals and dreams. All of our graduates are accepted to college or university.
  • In order to determine if a boy could benefit from our program, I would need to review documentation of his learning difference. Ideally, this would include both a current (within three years) cognitive and achievement testing assessment (WISC III test and a WIAT or Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery). All of our students take major standardized tests (SAT, ACT etc.) with accommodations as stipulated in their own personal documentation that we have on file at the School. Most of our boys are offered extended time, and a few are in need of reading assistance.
  • Students are in jacket and tie throughout the academic day. Maximum 6 students to a class. Each dorm room is equiped with internet access, cable TV and private phone with voice mail.
  • The school offers a Business Seminar class where the students run the student store "Little Seniors". Also offered is a robotics class offering "Battle Bots IQ" curriculum. The students design and build a robot for a national competition in a battle against robots from other schools.
  • LD types supported: Dyslexia / Language-based
  • School accreditations: NAIS,NYSAIS
  • Profile last updated: 10/05/2007
