  • Fountain Valley School of Colorado has announced its scheduled theatrical productions for the 2008-09 school year. Led by Director of Theater John Parra, FVS students will participate in “The Odd Couple” (female version); “Into the Woods” and “A … My Name is Alice.” Neil Simon’s original male version of “The Odd Couple” was a Broadway hit in 1965 before becoming a popular film and TV series. In 1985, Simon rewrote the show to make the protagonists female, but he still based the show on the same story line and same lead characters, now called Florence Unger and Olive Madison. “The Odd Couple” will show during Fall Family Weekend, Oct. 3-5. The winter musical is always a favorite of students and audiences alike, and this year’s production of “Into the Woods” will be no different. The award-winning musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, won several Tony Awards in a year dominated by “The Phantom of the Opera.” Inspired by Bruno Bettelheim's 1976 book “The Uses of Enchantment,” the musical intertwines the plots of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales and follows them to explore the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. The main characters are taken from the stories of Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, Rapunzel and Cinderella, tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife and their quest to begin a family. “Into the Woods” will show Feb. 13-15. The 2008-09 theater season will close with another musical, “A … My Name is Alice” on April 24-26. “Alice” will be combined with another musical revue titled “Pump Boys and Dinettes.” “A … My Name is Alice” is an Outer Critics Circle Award award-winning revue conceived by Joan Micklin Silver and Julianne Boyd which opened in 1984. It is a musical revue of about 20 songs and sketches performed by women of different ages and types in a "…wide variety of situations and relationships with insight, empathy and self-deprecating humor." “Pump Boys and Dinettes” premiered on Broadway on Feb. 4, 1982, at the Princess Theatre and closed June 18, 1983 after 573 performances. The musical revue tells the story of four males and two females who work at a gas station/dinette somewhere between Frog Level and Smyrna, N.C. The music is mostly from the country rock/pop music genres.

  • Science Faculty Rob Gustke has added a new dimension to his biology classes--beekeeping! A novice beekeeper, he moved his hive to Fountain Valley property after a bear had wiped it out at his Manitou Springs home. Seasoned apiarist Tony Lewis visited Gustke's Colorado Natural History class on Monday and explained the art of beekeeping. The class gathered around the hive to watch. As frames were pulled out, honeybees buzzed about and landed on students, but no one was stung. The frames were teeming with bees and larvae, a signal of the queen bee's good health. Gustke and the class discussed the biology of bees, their importance to the ecosystem and the ongoing mystery of colony collapse. Because the hives got a late start on campus this summer, Gustke will supplement their diet with sugar water in order that the bees can produce a supply of honey that will sustain them through the winter.

  • Sophia Nunez '09 has earned a place in the elect circle of National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists with the stand-alone highest score among all students in Boarding Selection Unit 4, which includes 23 schools in 8 Western states. Her accomplishment is especially notable because National Merit Scholarship score standards for boarding schools are higher than those for other schools. Semifinalists are selected based on their October 2007 PSAT, with 1.5 million juniors in the United States taking the test and less than one percent attaining scores high enough for recognition. This talented senior has an opportunity to continue in the competition, which will award $35 million in scholarships this spring. About 90 percent of the semifinalists will attain finalist standing, and approximately half of these will earn the Merit Scholar title. Finalists will be announced in February 2009. We'll keep you posted. Congratulations, Sophia!

  • Franklin Chiu '09 (Hong Kong) took advantage of a second-chance opportunity to qualify for the 3A Colorado State Golf Championship by winning the final qualifying spot during a four-way playoff Tuesday at the Denver Metro Regional Tournament at Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora. Chiu played some of his best golf of the season during the three-hole playoff and ultimately won the spot by sinking an eight-foot downhill birdie putt on the third playoff hole after nailing a 250-yard five wood to 20 feet of the green on the difficult par five third hole. Also competing in the regional tournament was Lukas Kiessner '10 (Germany), who last week met the qualifying standards for the chance to compete. Kiessner fought gamely and completed his round at 115. The Danes anticipated that a qualifying score would be an 85, so it was disappointing when Chiu completed his round at 89. However, it turns out a playoff ensued. Having a second chance after the disappointment of appearing not to qualify turned out to be an incredible opportunity, and he came through with flying colors by playing superb golf in a very stressful environment over the course of the playoff. It was a great finish to what has been an up and down year for Chiu on the course. The determination he showed during those last few holes will pay tremendous dividends for him as he moves on to the final meet. The two day 3A State Championship will be held on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 6 and 7, at Spring Valley Golf Course in Elizabeth, Colo. Congratulations to Franklin Chiu for becoming Fountain Valley's first state qualifier in golf!
