- BATTALION COMMANDER REACHES GOAL - Cadet Oliver Salman, a senior from Morrisville, NC has been named the Battalion Commander for the 2008-2009 year. “I knew I wanted to become the Battalion Commander when I arrived in the 9th grade” states Salman. “My plan was to be named Battalion Sergeant Major my junior year, which would place me in an excellent position for Battalion Commander.” His plan proceeded as he desired. Per his mom Fran, “as he entered 10th and 11th grade, he began to see and think about the future, and did what was needed to reach his goal.”As the Battalion Commander, Salman is the link between the Military Department and the Corps of Cadets, as well as the Faculty and Staff. He must be knowledgeable of all aspects of the Corps, and his attitude is to be the attitude of the Corps. All cadets look to him for guidance and leadership as well as compassion and fairness. He must set the example at all times. He should always remember that he is a leader of people and conduct himself accordingly. Asked why he is equipped for the position, his mom replied, “because of Hargrave he understands that a position of leadership is a position of service.” When his former TAC officer, CPT Tim Wilson, was asked that question, he quickly responded, “He has the total package. He has intellect, charisma and is a natural leader.”

Hargrave supports an independent military program which is NOT affiliated with the U.S. Armed Forces, or is supported by Federal, state and local governments. School focus is on college acceptance and leadership. Hargrave endeavors to maintain a safe, secure learning environment for both internal and external threats to our Corps of Cadets. Nine courses offered at the college level, either through AP or duel enrollment SAT average based on 100% of our graduating seniors. Each year, 100% of our senior class takes the SAT. In most schools, not all students are required to take the SAT. Median SAT for the Class of 2008: 1550 Hargrave's SAT mean and median scores based on the entire senior class, which lowers our score compared to other schools. Comparing schools strictly based on SAT scores is not a true indicator of any school's strength. 99 to 100% college acceptance rate for all seniors since 2003. Hargrave's Gen. Colin Powell Center for Leadership and Ethics adds a non-ROTC classroom element to the Academy's overall leadership training, teaching that good leadership is a learned. Nationally ranked Post-Graduate basketball and football programs, both often considered #1 by sports news media. Hargrave's 'How to Study' program is taught and used by students daily. Hargrave's reading program helps build student comprehension for better academic success in both high school and college.
